Who we are

TrichoTech has been testing for drug misuse since 1993, pioneering the research and development of hair and saliva analysis in the UK. Our laboratories are run by one of the strongest teams of toxicologists in the field of drugs of abuse testing. Our clients include over 3000 law firms, the Home Office, most UK Police Forces and Local Authorities, The Civil Aviation Authority, hospitals, clinics, and insurance, transport and manufacturing companies.

What we do

TrichoTech detects problem drug use in all biological specimens but holds a UK and European lead expertise in testing hair and oral fluids samples. Hair testing provides informative profiles of drug use or abstinence over months not days, and is the test of choice for for family lawyers and child guardians, recruitment and pre-employment, and for monitoring clinical treatment. Saliva tests will detect drugs of abuse for up to approx. 24 hours after ingestion. They are particularly useful for checks on safety operations or for post-incident testing. Saliva and hair tests are far more practical than urine testing: they are simpler, quicker and easier to collect, transport and store. They are also far more dignified for the donor. We do not perform tests for private individuals.

How we do it

Two main methods used for testing all specimens are immunoassays and gas chromatography/mass spectrometer analysis (GC-MS and GC-MS/MS). Samples indicating a positive result on an immunoassay are further analysed and confirmed using GC-MS (and GC-MS/MS) for a definitive 'fingerprint' profile of drug use. We perform both methods in our purpose built laboratories in Cardiff, opened by the First Minister of Wales.
