Has the client been supplementing his methadone maintenance programme with other drugs?
A drug addiction clinic uses oral fluid tests to check their clients were keeping to their methadone maintenance programmes. About every three months though, aware their clients were well-versed in the 24 hour nature of these tests, they would request a hair sample to gain a broader, more compete profile of drug use. These tests demonstrated that some clients were supplementing their methadone consumption with other drugs, and as the hair tests became more regular, so their self-reporting became more accurate.
